I am really not much of a believer in New Year’s resolutions. Maybe I don’t take life seriously enough, or maybe I just don’t like to set myself up for failure. I guess it is possible that I am just lazy – but let’s not go there. So rather than new years resolutions, I recently took on the challenge of making a bucket list. It’s simply a list of the 10 things I hope to do before I die. Nine of them include travel to exciting places, and even to my surprise most of those locations were in the middle east. But one involved a local challenge, and since this blog is about New Zealand and Australia, seems to be the one I should talk about.

I want to leap off of the Auckland Skytower. Not in a dangerous or suicidal way, but rather as an adrenalin pumping, cable controlled base jump. In case you are not familiar with it, the Auckland Skytower is the tallest free standing structure in the Southern Hemisphere. No mistakes here, it is even taller than the Sydney’s AMP Tower. This jump I am referring to, is another “Kiwi’s did it first” accomplishment, which would require me to stand out on a platform and take a leap of faith – free falling 192 metres to speeds of up to 85kph before I safety land on the ground. Apparently, the oldest person to have accomplished this feet is 94, so I cannot use “I am too old” a an excuse. I did put it out to popular opinion, so feel free to let me know what you think. But please be a little kinder than my sister who suggested that I wasn’t too old, but may be too heavy.

So, what’s stopping me? The answer is here.

In the meantime, I will sit home, fantasize about travel to exotic destinations, and make two single New Years resolutions. First, I will make an attempt to add a post here at Squids Downunder on a weekly basis throughout 2011 and secondly, I if I should plan my travels and get a stop over in Australia, I will try to plan it for Melbourne so I can actually meet Susanna in person.

Happy New Year.
